New York City – March 2026 – Endurant Energy (Endurant) has been awarded the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contract for the geothermal energy system that will serve The Climate Exchange on Governors Island. The innovative system will utilize the building’s 80-foot-deep foundation piles as part of the heating and cooling infrastructure.

Endurant, an LS Power company, was selected by The New York Climate Exchange to work alongside Skanska to design the project’s geothermal solution. The system integrates geothermal loops embedded within the building’s foundations, supplemented by additional geothermal boreholes. Designed to Passive House standards, the development aligns with New York State’s 2050 carbon neutrality goals and the Living Building Challenge, setting a new benchmark for sustainable development in New York City.

The state-of-the-art system will provide 100% of the heating and cooling requirements for The Exchange’s iconic climate campus. The solution combines geothermal loops installed within more than 400 foundation piles, supplementary boreholes, and rooftop-mounted modular air-source heat pumps.

An advanced controls platform will continuously analyze real-time ground and air temperature data to optimize system performance, delivering maximum energy efficiency while minimizing operating costs. The intelligent hybrid approach allows the system to adapt over time as building usage patterns and climate conditions evolve.

Scheduled to open for the fall semester of 2029, The New York Climate Exchange will serve as a global hub for climate research, education, convening, and innovation.

“Of the many geothermal projects, I’ve been involved with over the past 20 years, The New York Climate Exchange utilizing energy foundations is one of the most exciting,” said Tony Amis, Senior Vice President, Geothermal at Endurant Energy. “It demonstrates how renewable energy solutions can be integrated into major urban developments with minimal impact on construction schedules. Projects like this show how energy foundations are ago-to solution as New York City accelerates electrification and carbon reduction.”
