Can We Solve the Massive Rate Hikes for Customers of California’s Largest Utilities?
As we plunge into the third year of a global pandemic, the world is experiencing little relief from ever-increasing prices. Aggravating the situation, supply chain disruptions intensified by the war in Ukraine have caused inflation rates to soar to levels not seen since 1982.

New York is revolutionizing battery projects by allowing dual participation
This year, the New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) officially became the first grid operator to allow storage technologies to play a dual participating role in energy markets. This type of participation will facilitate battery installations across New York and the country as other grid operators follow their lead. To successfully develop and operate these systems, the intricacies of dual participation dispatch will need to be fully understood; and the Con Edison REV Demonstration pilot project will serve as an important example.

Integrating CHP and Battery Storage - The Financial Case for Hybrid Solutions
We introduced the concept of hybrid Combined Heat and Power (“CHP”) and Battery Energy Storage Systems (“BESS”) and went on to examine the technical use case that lends itself well to such configurations. However, success of an energy project is eventually contingent on financial returns. In the final post in this series, we examine the factors that contribute to financial success of a hybrid solution.

Integrating CHP and Battery Storage - The Technical Case for Hybrid Solutions
In the previous post in this series examining the integration of Combined Heat and Power (“CHP”) and Battery Energy Storage Systems (“BESS”), we introduced the common issues faced by CHP systems and how BESS serves to mitigate them. In this post, we dive deeper into the technical feasibility of a hybrid solution by studying load profiles and identifying trends that lend themselves well to hybrid solutions.

Integrating CHP and Battery Storage
The clean energy revolution has resulted in several technology, market, and policy drivers to accelerate the deployment of distributed energy resources. As the industry continues to evolve, innovative technical and financial configurations have come to life, each contextualized to hyper-local incentives, load profiles and customer goals. In this series of blogposts, GI Energy examines integrating two technologies that have the technical potential to complement each other’s performance; Combined Heat and Power (“CHP”) and Battery Energy Storage Systems (“BESS”). We start by introducing the concept and go on to study and technical and financial use cases that support this hybrid configuration.

SGIP Equity Budget Updates
On our blog earlier this year, GI Energy published a briefing on California’s SGIP. Since 2001, SGIP has offered financial incentives for distributed energy resource (DER) systems installed behind the customer meter. SGIP has undergone many changes since its inception, one of which being the creation of an equity budget in October 2017. The equity budget set aside a portion of SGIP funds for low income households and environmentally burdened communities. Now, SGIP has been updated once more to set aside a portion of the equity budget for resiliency purposes.
